Midrand, South Africa

27 January 2021

The Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority (MICT SETA) and the Institute of Chartered IT Professionals (ICITP) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) as of November 2020, to jointly provide ICT skills interventions to professionalize the South African IT sector and address the Information Technology skills gap.

Briefly the Institute of Chartered IT Professionals (ICITP) is an Information Technology professional body recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) according to the NQF Act of 2008. ICITP is the only body that can award the Chartered IT Professional, CITP(SA) and IT Certified Professional, ITCP(SA), professional status in the South Africa ICT sector & internationally.

The scope of the agreement sees both parties provide access to interventions, namely SAQA registered professional qualifications, recognition of prior learning (RPL) & professional learning programs (PLP), which refers to a workplace learning intervention to transfer critical and scarce skills in Information Technology. The programs are intended to produce in quantity & quality, specialized IT Certified Professionals for South Africa’s much needed IT skills, professionals that are committed to a code of conduct, continuous professional development (CPD) & Life-Long Learning.

The purpose of a professional certification is to impact knowledge understanding & practical experience to an individual, to apply the knowledge under a code of ethics in a practical manner in a professional practice. Critical programs such as Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, Web App Development, Graphic Development, Network Specialist, Database Development & Management, Software Testing, Data Science, Systems Analyst, Cloud Architecture, Business Analysis, and Information Security, are determined by the MICT Sector Skills Plan 2021/22

MICT SETA & ICITP intend on implementing professional registration and professional learning programmes across all nine provinces, ensuring inclusiveness of the various MICT stakeholders. Through utilizing Approved Training Office (ATO), SDL paying companies, existing IT employers, IT practitioners, skills development facilitators (SDFS) and accredited training providers that possess the listed critical & scarce skills, to transfer their knowledge to IT Graduates (candidates). Employers and accredited training providers will have an opportunity to play a role in transferring these skills through training and/or administering recognition of prior learning towards ICITPs professional qualifications registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
